A couple of weeks ago I released a podcast entitled “Stop trying to love god and let him love you“.
We all know that we can only love because God loved us first – but we sure struggle to live it!
I personally go back to trying in my own strength to love God and the others around me far too frequently.
So what are some practical ways we can avoid putting the cart before the horse and ensure our focus is on God’s love for us, not our love for God?
Here are two things that have helped me grow tremendously in this area:
1) Listen to songs about God’s love for us
This one might be hard for some of us… We struggle to just sit and receive.
We feel such a need to prove our affection for God.
But hey, that’s the problem so we shouldn’t be too surprised it’s a struggle for us.
The truth is though our attempts to love God will always fall short unless we first get a revelation of his love for us.
So I try to do this frequently. Find songs that talk about God’s love for us and just sit and listen to them over and over.
Learn to receive His love. Then you will be in a place to love Him purely.
Here is a great example to get you started:
2) Meditate on scriptures about God’s love
I know, I know, you would rather meditate on Leviticus 18 but I really would encourage you to do this. In fact, unless you understand God as the loving Father you will always misinterpret the scriptures!
Here’s one of my favourite exercises to do when trying to remind myself of God’s outrageous love.
1 John 4:8 says that “God is love” and 1 Cor 13:4-8 describes what love looks like in detail.
Try read 1 Cor 13:4-8 over and over and replace the word “love” with “God”.
God suffers long and is kind; God does not envy; God does not parade [Him]self, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek [His] own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. God never fails.
Reading this over and over puts a practicality into the fact that God “loves you” which we so easily make a simple saying rather than something that deeply affects our every moment and being.
I often just mull over one of those truths for days. Give it a go yourself and let me know how you get on.
What do you recommend?
So those are a couple of things I have found really helpful. But what about you?
What has helped you focus not on your love but His?
Or maybe you have a song or scripture that would fit in really well with my suggestions above. I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
If you haven’t already I also recommend that you listen to the podcast I mentioned. You can find it here: Stop trying to love god and let him love you.
