simple steps to knowing gods love for you

Simple Steps To Knowing God’s Love For You

A couple of weeks ago I released a podcast entitled “Stop trying to love god and let him love you“.

We all know that we can only love because God loved us first – but we sure struggle to live it!

I personally go back to trying in my own strength to love God and the others around me far too frequently.

So what are some practical ways we can avoid putting the cart before the horse and ensure our focus is on God’s love for us, not our love for God?

Here are two things that have helped me grow tremendously in this area:

1) Listen to songs about God’s love for us

This one might be hard for some of us… We struggle to just sit and receive.

We feel such a need to prove our affection for God.

But hey, that’s the problem so we shouldn’t be too surprised it’s a struggle for us.

The truth is though our attempts to love God will always fall short unless we first get a revelation of his love for us.

So I try to do this frequently. Find songs that talk about God’s love for us and just sit and listen to them over and over.

Learn to receive His love. Then you will be in a place to love Him purely.

Here is a great example to get you started:

2) Meditate on scriptures about God’s love

I know, I know, you would rather meditate on Leviticus 18 but I really would encourage you to do this. In fact, unless you understand God as the loving Father you will always misinterpret the scriptures!

Here’s one of my favourite exercises to do when trying to remind myself of God’s outrageous love.

1 John 4:8 says that “God is love” and 1 Cor 13:4-8 describes what love looks like in detail.

Try read 1 Cor 13:4-8 over and over and replace the word “love” with “God”.

God suffers long and is kind; God does not envy; God does not parade [Him]self, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek [His] own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. God never fails.

Reading this over and over puts a practicality into the fact that God “loves you” which we so easily make a simple saying rather than something that deeply affects our every moment and being.

I often just mull over one of those truths for days. Give it a go yourself and let me know how you get on.

What do you recommend?

So those are a couple of things I have found really helpful. But what about you?

What has helped you focus not on your love but His?

Or maybe you have a song or scripture that would fit in really well with my suggestions above. I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

If you haven’t already I also recommend that you listen to the podcast I mentioned. You can find it here: Stop trying to love god and let him love you.

  1. Man, I just love yr postings, it was so great to listen to this song and enjoy Father’s love and read yr message. I am on the train back home from a meeting up in the middle Finland….and I relaxed with yr posting. You r a gift from God to us. Also those in ministry like me need times to be quiet and recieve encouragement. You are a source of joy to me. Be blessed, bro.
Btw: I am a retired, Lutheran pastor, but still want to run for God in His business.

  2. Often times I get the biggest reminder of how much God loves me by listening to people tell their stories of how He rescued them from their past. These testimonies remind me of the faith God has placed in me by rsaving me as well. That little joyful morsel of faith is often the start of a service project, where I get a chance to see my freedom in Jesus used to help someone who has not opened their mind to this same beautiful freedom. My family rests in Jesus so we can deliver physical needs in order to introduce people to their spiritual needs.

    • Dude that’s such a huge one! Could be a whole series of blog posts! Feeding on testimonies of the goodness of God and the very clear evidence in our lives and those lives around us that “while we were still sinners He died for us”! Thanks so much for sharing Steve.

  3. I’ve lived knowing God’s love for me for many years. He started saving my life as a teenager, and has saved it multiple times since, last time being last Friday while I was on my way to Two Rivers to spend time with God and the 24/7 prayer torch they had last week. While driving to church he told me to slow down, I didn’t understand why, but luckily obeyed as he must have known a truck was about to pull out in front of me. If I hadn’t obeyed and took my foot off the gas pedal I wouldn’t have had time to avoid the accident. I thanked him for loving and saving me the rest of the way to church and for several more hours that day. I thank him for his love and his saving grace daily, he’s saved me more times than I can count. Then one night when I was at my rock bottom lowest, trapped in an abusive, ungodly marriage, after years of falling away from God I laid in bed silently crying and talking to him. Not really praying, more like crying out to him, talking to him like a long lost friend, telling him I was sorry for letting my life go down the road I was on. I was not where I expected to be at that point in my life, I let my ex tear me away from God and was so sorry and didn’t think I deserved forgiveness, that I was doomed. After at least half an hour of crying out to him, soaking wet with tears, out of tears to cry, I felt as if I had been picked up and was floating on a cloud. All the tears dried up like he wiped them off, I felt a warm embrace and a total peace come over me. Then I clearly heard his voice for the first time in my tell me that he loves me and will never leave me, not to worry, that everything will be okay. I had a few more rough and rocky years after that, but he kept his promise and saved me from my ex, and now I’m back into the relationship I was always meant to have with God. I love him, but even more importantly I know he loves me, with a love that outshines the brightest star. No one will ever be able to convince me he doesn’t exist or love me, because I know he does!

    • Thanks so much for sharing that Patricia! I’m sure there are many in the same situation you were in that need to hear your story so keep sharing it! Blessed to know you my friend!

  4. This is something I have been really concentrating on as well – God’s love for me. When I’m at church I transpose the words of many “worship songs” – I turn them around as I’m singing and replace it with his love for me and it makes the biggest difference in the world! Also, one day there was a song from years ago in my head and I decided to look it up on youtube and I found this version. If you watch and listen to this – I guarantee it will move you to tears. I believe God loves even the “worldly” love songs. It is Endless Love by Lionel Richie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVJnMj2oKfo. He is our endless love – He is our first love – He is every breath that we take. Beautiful. I absolutely loved the song you recommended above. Gonna download some of his stuff. I also love to meditate on Psalm 91 which speaks so beautifully of his love and protection for his children. THANK YOU!! GREAT POST!!!!!

    • Hi Kristen! That’s awesome – I need to go re-read Psalm 91 as I don’t think I’ve read it for a while, thanks for the recommendation!

  5. Do you have any other recommendations as far as music goes, Phil? It’s really tough to find Grace-centered worship songs in today’s church culture. I know Into The Pacific is a good band to check out, as well as Ben Dunn, but outside of them, I’m not sure what else is out there. Music is the biggest thing that feeds my soul, and I could really use that right now. That’s been a big hunger of mine lately.

    • Hey Ryan – there is a lot more than people know of although the quality can be hit and miss… here are some I love:

Obviously Godfrey Birtill who did the song in this post
      Timo Hack – Intrinsically ONE
Doxa Deo London – Grace is the rhythm
Mary-Anne Rabe – In His Light or her new album No Distance
New Creation Church (Joseph Prince’s church)

There are a few to get you going

  6. Excellent post and a reminder that NEVER gets old. Great suggestions from the other saints as well! Like someone else mentioned, God-saving testimonies is huge for me…especially my own. I sit and remember the day Jesus plucked me out of darkness and wrapped me in His Love Blanket! Gets me every time!
Recently, I’ve been listening to this http://youtu.be/FgzXXKjaPZA every single morning: Graham Cooke’s message on Dad’s love for His Beloved! Only a few minutes long and gets the day started right! The song “Intimacy” by Jonathan David Helser is also spot on :)

  7. Its so hard to truly understand how he could love us still after we’ve sinned and will continue too! i’m having a battle with this , I know he forgives me i just want peace and realizing that. My heart says god forgives me and will always. My head says No… One day at a time I suppose… I love all of your posts, they help me greatly.
